Back in the 1980s, a pornographic videotape of indeterminate origin began to circulate 'under the counter' in Britain. Bootlegged from numerous sources and consisting of several scenes of explicit bestiality guaranteed to make the jaded - let alone the squeamish - wince uncontrollably, the tape (copies of which were springing up everywhere, like uncontrollable weeds) became known as 'Animal Farm'. George Orwell was no doubt turning in his grave. For a while, it seemed as though just about everyone had seen - or knew someone who'd seen - the revolting images contained therein.
This Channel Four documentary unravels some of the mysteries surrounding this infamous bit of folklore, and a most disturbing story it is too. Bodil Joensen, a psychologically traumatised young woman who took the phrase "animal lover" to unsavoury new heights, became an unlikely poster-girl for the late sixties wave of bohemian liberation after a quasi-documentary featuring her gut-churning couplings with farmyard animals was premiered at a pornographic film festival. After that, it was all downhill, but to find out just how drastically it all went wrong, you'll have to watch the documentary for yourself. Even without any of the most repugnant images from Joensen's XXX-rated flicks (this is British terrestrial television, after all!), it makes for an extremely upsetting documentary. The film was smuggled into Britain 25 years ago and contained images of such sexual depravity it was never officially released. No one is quite sure where the film came from or how it was made. The Search for Animal Farm reveals the people who made the film, the impact it had on Britain's porn industry and the dark secret of the woman who became known as the queen of bestiality."
The most interesting comments (from a cultural standpoint) come during the first quarter, when several 'talking heads' (including the notorious pornographer Ben Dover, offbeat author David Kerekes and the ever-quotable Germaine Greer) offer up their first-hand experiences of 'Animal Farm', most of which will sound oddly familiar to viewers of a certain age. Phil Tonge's anecdote about several hard lads leaving the room to vomit is particularly poignant.
